March Madness 2014

This year’s bracket was released yesterday — no, I have not looked at it yet. But I will. And then I will fill one out with my most hair-brained guesses. Why? For the pride attached to trying to defeat all the other blindly-guessing folks in my circle of friends.

And a better reason? For a shot at $1 000 000, courtesy of Warren Buffet. Consolation prizes are $100 000 each — I know I’d be consoled!

Yes, the odds of filling out a perfect bracket are statistically slimmer than being struck by lighting a dozen times or finding a Malaysian airliner in your fridge, but as an old friend once observed:

Billions or not, if the energy and drama of March Madness is more than sufficient for you, perhaps this compilation of buzzer beaters will serve to get your blood pumping ahead of Tuesday’s warm-up and Thursday’s real action!

What a Goal!

I’m not even a soccer fan, but this is the kind of ending to a game that any sports lover can get into!

Stompin’ Tom Connors: The Hockey Song

stompin-tomYesterday, an iconic member of Canadian culture passed away at age 77.

One of Canada’s most prolific and well-known country and folk singers, Stompin’ Tom was credited with writing more than 300 songs. He had released four dozen albums, with total sales of nearly 4 million copies.

Yet among all his creations, it may be that the Hockey Song will go do as one forever woven into Canada’s fabric and knotted closely with the nation’s obsession with its sport of choice.

If you need an orientation OR just a reliving of past memories, here you go. In honour of Stompin’ Tom, I give you “The Hockey Game”…

In the process, you will bring an ounce of healing into your heart and world.

God Made a Farmer

A week ago, we were in Florida.  It was the first time I’d watched the Super Bowl in the US, on a network that showed the much-hyped commercials which air each year in those slots.

According to the experts, the loudest buzz surrounded this Dodge Ram ad featuring Paul Harvey’s reciting of a piece called, “God Made a Farmer.”

In honour of all the farmers I know, here you go.
