Live from Jerusalem

Below is an email I just sent to my family.  You’ve invited to be “part of the gang”, if you wish…

Hi all,

We’ve had zero access to the internet until today, but we’ve been alive and well the whole time so far!  We just arrived in Jerusalem this afternoon, after four days in the Galilee region.  There are some amazing things to see here, and even the simple act of driving the countryside just makes me shake my head… King Solomon built stables on that mountain… the Assyrian empire destroyed this city on their way to Jerusalem… Deborah led the people through this valley… Saul and Jonathan died in these hills somewhere… Jesus grew up a few miles from where I’m sleeping… crazy thoughts!

Our hotel is just inside the city walls of Jerusalem’s Old City.  We went exploring just an hour ago–went strolling on the Via Dolorosa, thought to be the road Jesus walked on the way to the cross.  This whole land is like the biggest museum on earth; every corner seems to bring something else.  Part of it is the age of this place, but its small size just highlights things because it’s as if layer after layer of history are just piled on top of one another.

Food’s been great so far, and our accomodations have been comfortable.  Things are expensive here–more than Canada–so our we-love-cheap-things-in-Asia experiences are making this seem pricey.  Ah well, we’re here and won’t be in a few weeks, so we’ll enjoy the experience while it lasts.

Pass this on to anyone you think might care to read it.

Love to you all,
Jason

MFP: Chris Paul

I recognize that I live in a part of the continent that pays little attention to the NBA. I recognize also that the famous teams with the big names get the lights shining on them, but Chris Paul has got to be one of the most forgotten players when it comes to major hoops discussions.

His past five games look like this…

27 points, 17 assists
26 points, 17 assists
37 points, 11 assists
25 points, 16 assists
23 points, 18 assists

And last month, he had a couple like this…

31 points, 11 assists, 9 steals
42 points, 9 assists, 8 steals

Anyone who nearly triple-doubles with steals… well, I don’t know what to say about that!

Chris Paul for MFP… give him a bit of time, and that’ll be MVP.

Heat and Pressure

So yesterday, I had a “divine in the domestic” moment.

Needing to dress up a bit more than usual, I opened the closet. Finding the shirt I wanted in need of a de-wrinkling, I went for the ironing board. Realizing that a bunch of my shirts were in the same shape, I grabbed a handful. Turning on the iron, I sighed at my memory of what a poor iron-er I am. Tasting some success, I pressed on with encouragement. Noting that last sentence’s terrible pun, I end this string of sentences.

A simple thought hit me as I ironed. It was a simple thought because those are the thoughts of simple men doing simple things.

Heat and pressure…

That’s the iron’s approach to making a shirt look sharp. And I’m amazed at how well it works. But there are those other times. You know the ones–when the shirt doesn’t respond well, when it doesn’t lay flat, when it tries to dodge, when it doesn’t listen. Ironing IN a wrinkle… can that be claimed as a gift because I can do it without even thinking!

And at that point, there’s just one solution… more heat and more pressure.

Somewhere in the puff of the steam and the gulp of the iron as I set it to rest, that image meant a lot. In fact, it meant enough to make me wonder if God had wrinkled a few of my shirts Himself just to get me to the board.

Heat and pressure… those serve a purpose. They’re presented to iron out wrinkles and smooth out crookedness and bring proper alignment.

Can I be conscious of that in my “heat and pressure” moments? Or do I just squirm, wish wishing for “relief”?

And if I do find a way to dodge it, can I accept that the coming solution will be… yeah… more heat and pressure?

Father, press us. Grant us just enough strength to remain under the heat and pressure that You bring. Beyond that, keep us weak that we might be easily straightened and quick to respond to Your hand upon us.

Star Wars According to a 3-Year-Old

This has to be one of the more well-spoken three-year-olds I’ve met.

I think we’ve found our movie critic of the future… very cute!
