Attracted to Weakness

My watch says that 2010 has less than thirty hours remaining in its existence.  In considering what I want from 2011, I’ve observed a steady strand running through flashing thoughts.

In the year ahead, I am craving God’s touch.

I am seeking to seek more.  I am longing for courage to walk long paths.  To pray more real-ly, to humbly invite God’s Spirit, to shut down foolish interruptions and to tune in quietly: These mark the strand I speak of.

Certainly, these words of Jim Cymbala’s fit as well:

“I discovered an astonishing truth: God is attracted to weakness.  He can’t resist those who humbly and honestly admit how desperately they need him.  Our weakness, in fact, makes room for his power.”

That’s what it is.

I could ramble and write for hours, but it would all come down to five words.

I want to make room.

Anne Rice’s Christmas Confession

If you connect the name Anne Rice immediately with visions of vampires and other dark tales. then you’re not alone.   But  that would be not nearly enough to know.

I have found my own spiritual journey impacted profoundly by this truly lovely woman, by her beautiful spirit, and by her gift for stringing words together.

This article appeared in the Wall Street Journal on Christmas Eve.

One small snippet contains her wondering:

Is there a more beautiful love story in our literature than that of God coming to be with us, coming to suffer the mundane and vulgar indignities of our physical world?

I do not know of any.

Nor do I, Anne.

Kane KO’s Cooke

Anyone who’s watched some of HBO’s 24/7 special on the Caps and Penguins will have seen some of the behind-the-scenes life of hockey tough guys like Matt Cooke.  He’s considered one of the pre-eminent pests in the league.

But back on April 10 of this year, young Evander Kane stepped in with poor Cooke, and looked a lot like the only other Evander I’ve ever heard of.

Court Surfing

You know it’s a slow holiday-type period when a sports writer pens an article assessing the fashions and failures of NBA court designs.

We need not follow that statement with any further ones about people who find such articles.
