Thursday Thanks (61-65)

fiveEach week (I aim for Thursday), I’ll use this space to list five things (items, experiences, people, whatever) for which I’ve been recently grateful. Consider it my “blessings count”. Ann Voskamp’s famous challenge to list 1000 gifts seemed daunting — I’m committing to 500, a task which will take me two years of weekly posts to complete!

I missed last week for no reason that’s good enough! Back at it…

1) Chiropractors
Two weeks ago, I was in some serious discomfort. Three ribs were out, and activities like breathing were becoming painful. My highly skilled chiropractor from the Arrowhead Clinic Decatur Georgia Chiropractor worked wonders in two sessions, and I was again grateful for him!

2) Sun
After what felt like a forever of cloud and rain, recent sunny days have been a true treat.

3) Shop Vac
My Dad gave me one of these for Christmas. Ten days ago, when Saskatchewan citizens were building arks, I was christening my Christmas gift by sucking water out of my basement. It works!

4) Kids
Last night marked the end of our church’s Vacation Bible School — a gym-full of kids brought energy and fun to the whole week. I’m thankful for great leaders who gave their best to the children all week!

5) Golf
I don’t particularly love this game, but I had a chance this week to hit a bucket of balls at the driving range, and I remembered how fun it is to connect (every once in a while) a club with a ball. I’ll definitely do it again!

Thursday Thanks (56-60)

I postponed this post so that I might include thoughts from my wife’s 20th high school reunion. Here we go:

1) Friends
Everyone could list this one, but there is something very special about friends with whom many miles have been logged. There’s a special gift found with those who knew each other before any of us were anything at all!

2) Rain
My gratitude for the weekend’s rains was tempered by the way that a usually beautiful camp was transformed into a swamp. Unreal!

3) Socks
There is a special joy to putting on a new pair of socks. There is a lesser joy two days of sloshing in your socks. There is another wonderful joy to putting on dry socks when you get home.

4) Showers
I have likely listed this one before, but the first shower back at home after a few days away always strikes me as beautiful!

5) Laughs
A decent reunion is always laugh-filled. Some of the laughter was from hearing stories of the past 20 years of friends’ lives. Some of the loudest laughter was from the retelling and reliving of stories from much farther back than that!

Thursday Thanks (51-55)

Despite disruption to last week’s post, I was still grateful! Here, I’ll prove it to you…

1) Small Voices
Our two-year old loves to sing. Every night before bed, we read a book filled with the lyrics to “You are My Sunshine”. I lead and leave out words for her to fill — and some of those fills are the cutest sounds human ears have ever heard.

2) Thunder
Our city had a lot of rain this week, and even some thunder. Even some morning thunder! What is it about those sky-shaking acoustics? I don’t know exactly, but I love it.

3) Execution
Though that word may bring to mind the death penalty in Texas, this is actually a statement about basketball in Texas. In the NBA Finals, the San Antonio Spurs took a Miami Heat team loaded with talent and then destroyed them. If you wanted to see how basketball is supposed to be played, the clinic was aired on TV for the world to learn. It’s fun watching perfection!

4) Praying Friends
I sent a text to several friends last week, asking for specific prayers. Many responded quickly that they were on it. That makes me grateful.

5) Rockin’ Robin
Our five-year-old had her preschool concert this week. The whole program was about birds — trivia, jokes, poems. But no doubt, the highlight was a choreographed performance to Rockin’ Robin. My wife could hardly breathe, she was getting such delight from the show! And I was grateful for both a dancing daughter and a weeping wife. 🙂

Thursday Thanks (46-50)

I missed it last week altogether, as I was too busy aging by a year!

Back to being grateful!

1) Sheets
With summer officially here, we recently changed the sheets on our bed to something other than flannel. I visited this page to find a local laundry mat so I can get my sheets cleaned. Whether it’s laundry days or seasonal changes, why do I so love the feel of clean sheets?

2) Bikes
Beautiful weather and city street construction have give me multiple reasons to love riding my bike to work lately.

3) Spurs
I haven’t cared so much about sports series as I do about the NBA Finals, in I-don’t-know-how-long. The Spurs knocking out the Heat would be a thing of beauty. Love that team!

4) Theology Books
Studying for a lesson series on the Holy Spirit, I was blown away by portions of writing from Gordon Fee and Clark Pinnock. Crystal-clear language about beyond-description truths — these are marvelous to me!

5) Exact
That’s the brand name of Superstore’s razors that I have recently begun using. The quality seems great, and they’re a fraction of every big-brand version of I’ve been scammed into paying for. Cheap and smooth — that’s how I like to be!

Thursday Thanks (41-45)

I missed it by a day this week (again), but surely there’s no expiration date on gratitude!

1) Amazon
Tomorrow, we are having birthday party number two for our youngest daughter. We ordered gifts on the mega-website a couple weeks back, and they arrived this afternoon – as on-time as one could hope! (No drones were involved in this delivery.)

2) Parents
My folks spent a couple hours with our children this afternoon, freeing my wife and me for a couple errands and an afternoon walk in the park. Yay for loving parents and wonderful grandparents!

3) Heat
The above-mentioned walk was our way of enjoying the most full-blown summer day of the year so far. What a treat!

4) Frozen Green Tea
Tim Hortons also played a role in the afternoon pleasures, providing the liquid refreshments to go with the sweet company.

5) Ballet
I cannot say that this art form is among those which I appreciate most, but this weekend marks our first recital experience as parents. Our two oldest daughters will play Dr. Seuss-related roles in the year-end performance further for their dance school. Should be sweet!
